WHAT TO WEAR: Road to Hana | Maui, Hawaii

Prepping for a recent getaway to Maui, I found myself obsessing over packing lists and finding the most trek-worthy outfit to wear on the day we reserved for the Road to Hana.

And being the driver, it had to last through 6+ hours of winding roads, unpredictable weather, and various sightseeing stops (beach, jungle, waterfalls, and more).

What I decided on became my official Maui uniform for the trip, and if I could only choose one ensemble to wear each day, this would be the one.

You know you’ve got these items in your closet already. Round ’em up and set them aside for your next tropical road trip.

  1. Beachy trucker hat. This one from Patagonia is similar to one from Lululemon I’ve had for 5+ years now — simple, vented, and fast-drying.
  2. Slouchy V-neck. Don’t wear anything too precious on the Road to Hana. Go for your most comfortable cotton t-shirt. Bring an identical back-up in case of an overturned-roadside-coconut spill (true story).
  3. Light denim shorts. Worn-in, a little roomy, and not too short.
  4. Mirrored sunnies. I finally gave in to the peer pressuring from countless Bachelor/ette alums and bought a pair of Diff sunglasses. Worth it.
  5. Cozy sneakers. I’ve gone through 3 pairs of these sneakers-meet-mocassins-meet-aquasocks dream shoes by Native. Maybe not so much aquasock material, but OK with water, easy to clean, and sturdy enough for driving. I’m already eyeing my next pair..

AT-HOME TOURIST: Chilhuly Garden and Glass

At the start, I’ll admit I only planned this trip to entertain an out-of-town guest who wanted to see the Space Needle up close. I’ve lived in the Seattle area for 15+ years and have never taken a trip to the top of the thing, but I was game for a little tourist time at Chilhuly Garden and Glass. That’s what vacation days are for. Continue reading “AT-HOME TOURIST: Chilhuly Garden and Glass”

LOCAL WANDERLUST: Lake Chelan’s got a “Crush” on you

Lake Chelan Crush

If you’re looking for an excuse to re-visit your summer fling with Lake Chelan, don’t give in to Seattle’s gray skies just yet, and head over to the annual Crush festival hosted by Lake Chelan Wine Valley.  Continue reading “LOCAL WANDERLUST: Lake Chelan’s got a “Crush” on you”

SEATTLE STYLE: What everyone is wearing, rain or shine

Seattle Uniform

A few months ago, Joanna Goddard of A Cup of Jo blogged about what everyone is wearing in NYC. A striped long-sleeved tee, army-green anorak, and white converse sneakers all made the list (which is pretty much what everyone in Seattle is wearing, too). IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD: Kerry Park, Seattle

Kerry Park

On any given day (and time), this famous photo-op spot is abuzz with photographers, families, runners, and locals all clamoring for an opening to snap their own Seattle skyline shot. The view never gets old and always looks different with the changing seasons.

This day, the fog rolled in over the sound to paint the city in pastel hues; the regal Mount Rainier brushed itself into the background.
